Xiaomi is set to make headlines in the electric vehicle market with the official launch of its first electric SUV, the highly anticipated Xiaomi YU7. The unveiling will take place during a special event on Thursday, May 22 at 7 PM Beijing time, marking a significant milestone in Xiaomi EV’s expansion strategy and a direct move to compete with industry leaders like the Tesla Model Y.

YU7: A New Chapter in Xiaomi’s EV Ambitions

The Xiaomi YU7 SUV follows the successful debut of the Xiaomi SU7, the company’s first electric sedan, which was launched on March 28, 2024, as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3. Later, Xiaomi introduced the SU7 Ultra, a high-performance version boasting a staggering 1,548 horsepower, which solidified Xiaomi’s presence in the high-end EV segment.

Despite being a relatively new player in the EV market, Xiaomi EV has already proven its potential. In April 2025 alone, the brand delivered over 28,000 vehicles, marking the seventh consecutive month of deliveries exceeding 20,000 units. These numbers highlight the rapidly growing demand for Xiaomi electric vehicles and the brand’s ability to establish a strong and loyal customer base in a competitive landscape.

Xiaomi YU7 vs Tesla Model Y: Size and Design Comparison

Initial details about the Xiaomi YU7 were revealed in December 2024, when the company announced its intent to target the Tesla Model Y market segment. According to regulatory filings, the YU7 SUV will measure 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. In comparison, the updated Tesla Model Y is slightly smaller, measuring 4,790 mm long, 1,982 mm wide, and 1,624 mm tall, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase. This means the YU7 offers more interior space, potentially making it more appealing to families and long-distance travelers.

Setbacks and Challenges in Xiaomi EV’s Journey

However, the road hasn’t been entirely smooth. In late March, a fatal crash involving the Xiaomi SU7 led to three deaths, drawing public scrutiny and sparking safety concerns. Additionally, various quality control issues related to the SU7 sedan have been reported on Chinese social media platforms. These incidents appear to have impacted consumer confidence, as reflected in the latest insurance registration data.

For the week ending May 11, Xiaomi EVs recorded 5,180 insurance registrations, down nearly 9% from the previous week’s 5,690 registrations. This marks the third consecutive week of declining numbers, signaling a potential slowdown amidst safety concerns and growing competition.

A Major Event for Xiaomi’s Expanding Tech Ecosystem

The upcoming Xiaomi launch event is not just about the YU7 SUV. It represents a broader push by the company to expand its tech ecosystem. Alongside the YU7, Xiaomi will introduce its first in-house mobile processor, the Xring O1 chip, as well as the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and the Xiaomi 7 Ultra tablet.

This multi-product launch strategy reflects Xiaomi’s ambition to integrate its hardware, software, and automotive technologies under one cohesive brand identity — a move that could further strengthen its position in the global tech and EV markets.
