Google will stop supporting early production Nest Thermostats on October 25

Google has announced that, effective October 25, it will cease software updates and official support for its first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. In addition, the company will stop introducing new Nest products in Europe.

Owners of Nest thermostats released in 2011 and 2012 (plus the 2014 European edition) will no longer receive firmware updates, security patches, or customer support via the Nest and Google Home apps. Users can still control basic functions—such as adjusting temperature settings and schedules—directly on the device.

“To fully invest in future advancements and deliver cutting-edge features on our newest Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each more than a decade old,” Google stated.

Google cited the diversity of heating systems across Europe as the reason for halting new Nest thermostat launches on the continent:

“Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes.”

Existing Nest models will remain available for purchase in Europe while stocks last, but no further device rollouts are planned.

This move underscores Google’s shift to prioritize its latest hardware lineup, ensuring that resources focus on advanced features, energy-saving capabilities, and tighter integration with today’s smart-home ecosystem.
